ABSTRACT

Various types of weak swelling strata occur in many mine areas in Turkey such as Soma-Işiklar, Alpagut-Dodurga, Soma-Darkale etc. Excavations in these strata become badly deformed and deteriorated by the violent swelling rock pressure, so that frequent repairs are needed, influencing the ongoing production and mine construction, greatly. Therefore, it is of vital importance to research on rock pressure and supports in drifts built in weak swelling strata. In this study, in-situ measurements on test supports were conducted to determine the rock load around the opening on steel set supports for the main drift in Soma-Işiklar Colliery of Turkey.
