ABSTRACT
The paper presents a number of major activities, which were undertaken to restructure the Polish coal mining sector in the 1990s. Special attention is given to technical and technological aspects. A mathematical modeling example is presented which involves optimizing the production at a colliery, taking into account the quality requirements of end users.
