ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a brief overview and survey of impacts and six examples of impact "models" and analyses. It deals with transportation system impacts. Such impacts cover a broad spectrum, all the way from the destruction of historic markers to the economic development of the entire metropolitan area. One of the easiest ways to identify and anticipate certain transportation system impacts is to locate relevant articles in a good newspaper. A fuller analysis would take into account energy consumption for stations and maintenance, guideway construction, and vehicle manufacturing. Air pollutants emitted from the internal combustion engine while either mobile or stationary may have significant adverse effects on air quality both on a regional and a local scale. The primary purpose of microscale modeling is to determine the influence of a proposed project on the air quality in the area within approximately 0.3 km of the project.
