ABSTRACT

The extraction and clean-up procedures described here are used to prepare atmospheric particulate samples for analysis by one of the methods described in 102B, 102C or 102D. The polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are extracted from the particulate matter using a non-polar solvent, cyclohexane, which extracts less extraneous material than a more polar solvent. The extracts can be further cleaned up by running them through an activated alumina column to separate the PAHs from interfering compounds (1–5).
