Mining below 3000m and challenges for the South African gold mining industry

Potential new mining projects at ultra-depth are identified and some of the mining challenges at these depths are discussed. A new research programme, called DEEPMINE, is described and some of the important research projects are highlighted. Finally, the future of the South African gold mining industry is briefly discussed in terms of the development of new technology and people.
