Sales-increasing projects can better be described under the headings of marketing research, nutrition research, and product development, each of which received about one-third of available funds in 1989. Over much of the 1980s, red meat producers have seen their market share, and profitability, erode to the benefit of poultry Moreover, the right to a royalty on a calf or pig is distinct from the practicality of enforcing that right, especially in light of certain opposition by livestock producers as well as animal rights groups. Since animals treated with somatotropin during the growth period grow faster, there is also an increase in feed efficiency for meat-type animals. Genes conferring hormone production in the red meat species have been identified and cloned and, on an experimental basis, inserted into goats, sheep, and hogs. The production of feeder animals will not be affected directly unless hormone use is found to stimulate growth at earlier stages in the growth cycle.
