ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the wet-process, using sulfuric acid and phosphate rock to produce wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA). The chemical and physical nature of WPA are also discussed. The phosphate rock used to produce WPA contains not only phosphate, but also a whole range of impurities. All of the elements reported to the acid phase during the production of WPA. Therefore, WPA as it is produced from the filter is not suitable for the production of fertilizers. A typical analysis of WPA as produced from the filter is: Along with the elements listed above, a significant level of organic material also reports to the acid. It is also used to wash the filter cake in the WPA process. The WPA producer must clarify the WPA, as well as concentrate it to a suitable P2O5 content.
