ABSTRACT
The hints are only hints and are not meant to be complete designs of machine elements. The original sprocket and gear design was molded in one piece from powder metal. Thin castings and powder metal parts become practical in fluid-tight designs if impregnation is considered as routinely as heat treatment or a coat of paint. Difficult-to-machine parts can be aligned in fixtures. The use of machinery adhesives in the unavoidable inner space of fitted parts turns a problem into an asset and improves the productivity of machinery design, manufacture, and repair. Making the parts in separate, simpler molds allowed better shrinkage control and eliminated all machining and deburring by bonding them with machinery adhesives. The knurl centers the shaft, provides instant fixture, assists in the wetting of the adhesive, enlarges the area wetted, and provides electrical contact. For electrical insulation, adhesive is applied to one surface and dusted with glass beads of appropriate size.
