ABSTRACT

A general equation for calculating the factor of safety in homogeneous c-φ slopes utilizing the soil strength parameters and the slope configuration is presented in this paper. The computer program SLOPE/W is used to obtain the safety factors in different slopes. In addition to the generalized limit equilibrium (GLE) method, three other popular methods are used namely; ordinary, Janbu, and Bishop. Dry and saturated slopes are solved separately to study the effect of the presence of water in the slope. Additionally, purely cohesive slopes are also analyzed for both dry and saturated soils. Results indicated that the slope height is the most effective parameter in the value of the safety factor, followed by the presence of water in the soil. The soil shear strength parameters (c and φ) have approximately the same effect. On the other hand, the effect of slope angle (β) is very low compared to other factors.
