ABSTRACT

Two projects are summarized for which deep foundations were needed, but for which drilled shafts (caissons) were not appropriate. Drilled piles were selected as an alternative for both projects. Lost ground, hole caving, pinnacles, and seamy rock created difficulties with piling installations. Solutions to these difficulties included adding gravel at the ground surface to compensate for lost ground, using an Odex® system to install casing as each hole was drilled, using wood plugs at the bottoms of holes where voids were present, careful drilling at pinnacles, and using geotextile “socks” to bridge voids.
