ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the two pillars standing on the foundation, namely the just-in-time system and automation with a human touch. In the decade immediately after the Second World War, Toyota always had a production plan ready in the first part of the month. But parts could not be gathered until the middle of the month. As for the assembly line, most of its work was done near the end of the month. In this way, the company somehow met its monthly quota. Factors causing changes in production plans are numerous, including changing market conditions and varied factors affecting the manufacturer. When these factors are at work, and if a problem arises in the preceding process, the next process may find a shortage in parts and in other items. The kanban is used to withdraw parts or to order the production of parts. Through the kanban system, just-in-time production can be performed smoothly, and waste in the workplace is eliminated substantially.
