ABSTRACT

The Food and Agriculture Organization collects and disseminates information relating to nutrition, food, and agriculture. The European Community promulgates rules for food control with the intention of aiding the operation of the single market. Statutes and regulations may be enforced by government departments, by nondepartmental government bodies, by statutory boards of authorities, or by local and regional authorities, depending on the prevailing administrative structure in the member state. The World Health Organization was established as a specialized agency within the League of Nations in 1948, after an interim commission had already been active for some years, thus demonstrating the growing appreciation of international cooperation as essential to universal welfare. Historically the states and territories of Australia have been responsible for regulating the domestic food supply and have implemented their own food safety legislation. Human health and pesticide issues and some mandates for environmental requirements may be delegated by the provinces to the municipalities.
