ABSTRACT

The concept of interdependence is a multifaceted one. The notion of connecting disenfranchised people back to their communities sounds simple. The notion of neighbor is crucial to community integration. As people get back to community, sooner or later they will find themselves in the neighbor role. Interdependence holds that heterogeneity is a positive element for communities. As interdependence is such a holistic concept, those of us so inclined realize that change can and should happen on a number of fronts. The four actions of interdependence that are things people can do in support of people with disabilities includes: role competency enhancement, supplemental supports, relationship building, and systems advocacy. If there is a single dimension that must be repeated and underscored with interdependence, it is that of relationships. In an exciting way, the concept of bridge-building is a way to interdependence.
