ABSTRACT

Through the examinations of both the theoretical model of track and the meaning of wheel drop test, it has been clarified that it can predict the dynamic characteristics of the track under train operation. This chapter discusses the dynamic behavior of railway vehicles and track. It is necessary to clarify their roles with an appropriate model. Realizing this, analyzing the data measured in ground structures including track under running train and comparing them with predictions, the actual values of track coefficients have been pursued in a variety of conditions. In some cases, it is enough to know the response of the ground structure without knowing the detail of it. This is feasible with the use of the proposed wheel-set drop test because the response of the ground structure under a wheel-set drop test is equivalent to those under a running train.
