ABSTRACT

The choice of instrument and its position in the dam must be the responsibility of the dam designer. Only he knows the problems with the individual dam that he is designing to suit a particular site. He knows the information he requires from the instrumentation and is therefore the only one competent to decide on type and position for the instruments. It is of course necessary for him to know what instruments are available and both their accuracy and reliability. In this, information from the manufacturers can be helpful, but it is to be expected that a dam design engineer will be fairly au fait with current instrumentation practice.
