ABSTRACT

The measurement of sound and its characteristics plays an important role in the development of a systematic approach to noise control. In particular, the measurement of overall sound levels can be used to determine compliance with regulations or pertinent criteria. These measurements can also be used to assess the effectiveness of various control methods and to establish realistic goals. Although measuring sound level is an essential aspect of characterizing noise, other parameters associated with noise, such as duration and spectral content, are often equally as important. Today, sound measurement instrumentation embodies a wide range of complexity and sophistication. The need to understand the capabilities and limitations of this equipment is critical in order to properly interpret measurement results. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the various types of available sound measuring and analysis tools, and to discuss the basic applications of these instruments.
