ABSTRACT

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has a significant effect on productivity, absenteeism, and building occupants’ general feeling of well-being. A pro-active program designed to reduce the likelihood of problematic exposures and conditions is the most cost-effective approach to maintaining good indoor air quality. An effective plan for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality must focus on the following fundamental elements: communication, prevention of potential problems, maintenance and operations, training and education, and inspections. IAQ consultants, engineers, and researchers believe indoor air quality has a significant effect on productivity, absenteeism, and occupants’ feeling of well-being. Simple procedures can help eliminate potential sources of problems or even the perception that a building has poor air quality. An effective plan for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality must focus on the following fundamental elements: communication, reduction of potential problems, maintenance and operations, training and education, and inspections.
