ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a discussion of the individual component parts of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including an explanation of the relationship between each of these components and the achievement of good indoor air quality (IAQ). It discusses the role that the following components play in achieving good IAQ. When designing or evaluating a building, one of the first IAQ considerations that will affect the ability of the HVAC system to be able to provide good IAQ over the life of the building is the location of the outdoor air intakes. The quantity of outdoor air entering the building will be exactly equal to the quantity of air leaving the building. For buildings with large amounts of air being exhausted, an IAQ problem may result from an insufficient quantity of make-up. The occupied spaces of the building will be negatively pressurized with respect to the outdoors.
