Every company and every department within a company has a culture. Some are planned but most simply evolve over time. Dr. David Mutchler and James Bleech, in their book Let’s get results, not excuses, published in 1994 have clearly defined the problem facing nearly every organization and have mapped out a straightforward solution to the challenge of eliminating excuses so the entire organization can focus on results. Their findings are confirmed every time we look at organizations that excel in consistently delivering results. Whether it is a Navy SEAL team, an Army Special Forces team, a highly skilled Research & Development Team or a well-organized and motivated operating room team performing complex surgery, the end results speak for themselves. Creating a “No Excuses” culture is fundamental to effective leadership and coaching. A “No Excuses” culture cannot be implemented if employees fear they will be punished for telling the truth.
