ABSTRACT

Successful coaching requires a “win-win” relationship. Spend adequate time in advance of the coaching session to think through each step to determine what managers want included and what managers need to guard against. The coach must take the time to think through the obstacles he may be forced to deal with during the coaching session. Taking the time to plan in advance is critical to the success of this process. There is sometimes a temptation to skip the preparation stage when time is short, to enter the coaching session “on the fly.” By moving the focus from the individual who is being coached to the team, his work group, and the company, the employee is able to gain insight into his importance to the organization and the importance of the job he is doing. When people understand that what they are doing has value and that they are important to the team’s mission, they will want to get the results.
