ABSTRACT

This chapter describes two applied sustainability projects that strive to holistically rebuild social infrastructure while also regenerating the natural environment. The first context is among the Khumbu Sherpa inside the protected area that houses Mount Everest in the Nepalese Himalaya; the second engages Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) and public lands managed by the U.S. Forest and Fish and Wildlife Services in the southern Great Basin, U.S.A. In both areas, research showed that certain ecological knowledge connected to more sustainable environmental decision-making shifted to adapt to contemporary circumstances. These context-specific applied research efforts thus attempt to connect indigenous ecological and management knowledge to protected area management and interpretation while also affording opportunities for economic development and intergenerational knowledge transmission.
