ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the current state of the art of the use of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Composites in orthopedic surgery. Carbon-Fiber-Rein-forced Carbon (CFRC), Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polysulfone (CFRPS) and Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polyaryl Ether Ether Ketones (CFRPEEK) are successively considered for total hip replacement and internal fixation. Manufacturing processes, mechanical performances, and biological properties of these composites are reviewed according to the data of the scientific literature and the experience of the authors.
