ABSTRACT

Rule-based expert systems are one of the new techniques available that have possible application to waste minimization. To meet the goals of improving technology transfer and evaluating the applicability of expert system technology, the WAste Minimization Management Advisory System (WAMMAS) was developed under die sponsorship of the New York State (NYS) Center for Hazardous Waste Management. WAMMAS has been developed to be used by a range of individuals, from owner/operators of small industrial concerns to the environmental engineering specialists employed by major industries. At the request of the NYS Center for Hazardous Waste Management, a significant change to the original project proposal was incorporated. Reduction of industrial waste generation through a well planned waste minimization program is possible if industrial attention is focused on source reduction and recycling instead of the traditional methods of treatment, storage, and disposal.
