ABSTRACT

Soil gas sampling is a method used to support measurement of soil atmosphere characteristics which may indicate processes occurring in and below the sampling horizon. Soil gas sampling can suggest the presence, composition, and origin of pollutants in and below the vadose zone; however, the method is somewhat qualitative, and conclusions based upon soil gas data must take this into account. Soil gas monitoring is a valuable screening method for detection of volatile organic contaminants, the most abundant analytical group of ground-water pollutants (Plumb and Pitchford, 1985).
