ABSTRACT

Transport is responsible for nearly 40 per cent of the accidental deaths in Britain and, while overall accident rates are declining, casualty rates for pedestrians and cyclists have actually increased. This chapter aims to encourage industry to adopt cost-effective, energy saving measures: saving money and helping the environment. Half of all transport fuel is used by commercial vehicles and a significant fraction of transport fuel consumption is therefore under the control of a few thousand organizations. It is clear that the driver's right foot is a significant factor that must be considered if fuel efficiency is to be improved. An additional bonus came in customer relations, as the high standards of driving and safety exercised by drivers have prompted customers to trust in an effective and reliable service. Fuel efficiency is also improved if the driver can avoid congested traffic, and there is now a wide range of computer-based systems to aid route planning.
