ABSTRACT

The Sulb Series is part of the Panafrican basement complex, west of the Nile in the southern part of the Wadi Halfa Province, Northern State of Sudan. It is a zone which extends in N-S direction and forms the border between the high grade migmatitic and granitic older basement in the west, and the low grade volcanosedimentary sequence of the Abu Sari Group in the east. The Sulb Series comprises mainly marble, biotite schists and gneisses, and amphibolites, with some white mica schists, quartzites, and metaconglomerates. The series also includes few bodies of gabbro, other gabbroic to intermediate plutons and serpentinite. It is intruded by quartz diorite, granodiorite and by felsic dykes. Marbles form bands of tens of meters thick, but also occur as small lenses enclosed in amphibolite. They are dark grey to whitish in colour, and coarse to medium grained, massive as well as strongly foliated rocks.
