ABSTRACT

The name Hamrat el Wuz Formation is proposed for the sedimentary rocks of the Es Safya graben between Hamrat el Wuz and Es Safya. An Albian to Santonian age is assigned to the subsurface sedimentary units on the basis of palynomorphs, while angiosperm leaves and ferns indicate Campanian to Maastrichtian age for the outcroping units. The sedimentary thickness of this formation varies from a few meters to approximately 400 m. It rests unconformably on Precambrian basement and is overlain by recent superficial deposits. The Hamrat el Wuz formation consists mainly of mudstone, sandstone, some pebbly sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate.
