ABSTRACT

The development of a ferricrete in dependency of the structural and morphological evolution can be demonstrated by the example of Jebel Howag (Kordofan province, Sudan). Products of deep lateritic weathering have been redeposited by mass wasting processes. On this material a ferricrete developed in a low position of the landscape by lateral migration and absolute enrichment of iron. Following a reversion of the drainage pattern, a relief inversion brought the hard ferricrete into its present high position. During the Miocene this ferricrete plateau was dissected by faulting. Hence the development of different weathering products reveals a considerable influence of the tectonic evolution of the area.
