ABSTRACT

Abstract. In this lecture the main figures of mathematicians in Bologna in the XVIIIth century are presented in their social and cultural context. Gabriele Manfredi (1681–1761) and Vincenzo Riccati (1707–1775) were not only the most important mathematicians, but also the teachers of other remarkable mathematicians as Gianfrancesco Malfatti, Gregorio Casali, Sebastiano Canterzani, Alfonso Bonfioli Malvezzi. Several Mathematicians were protagonists of the scientific life in this city from the foundation of the Istituto (Francesco Maria Zanotti (1692–1777) was secretary and president of the Accademia delle Scienze) to the republican triennium (1796–1799).
