ABSTRACT

There are five categories of geometric characteristic symbology. They are as follows: form; profile; orientation; runout; and location. Some geometric characteristics are controls of the interrelationship of the feature to which the characteristic symbol has been assigned to another feature's perfect geometric counterpart. This type of control is one which relates a feature or features to a datum or datums. Both profile of a line and profile of a surface are allowed to be either related or individual. However, profile of a surface is most often related to a datum or datums and profile of a line is often individual. The regardless of feature size material condition concept is usually invoked for features that (in their functional situations) must be tightly or more uniformly controlled. The maximum material condition symbol allows a tolerance zone to grow when used on size features as the features depart in size from maximum material condition.
