ABSTRACT

Assessment of water resources requires knowledge of both the water quantity and water quality processes. Water quantity occurs as a result of various natural factors including the geology, topography, climate, and the hydrology of a region. It is also affected by activities of man as a secondary factor in its evolution. Water quality also evolves as a function of the natural hydrologic environment and man-made causes. In this case, however, the impact of the society, especially as related to urbanization and industrialization, is a primary causal factor in the occurrence of water quality. Furthermore, the two processes, water quantity and water quality, are in continuous interaction, so that a proper evaluation of water resources, both from technical and economical points of view, requires a full understanding of both processes.
