ABSTRACT
This paper provides a discussion of the future needs for underground space use and the implications of this need for the planning, design and management of underground facilities. Due to the complexity of underground geologic conditions and existing underground structures, computer methods have a strong role to play in providing economical and safe design solutions and in developing new technologies for underground construction.
