ABSTRACT
Gaze, or looking, is of central importance in social behaviour. It is partly a non-verbal signal but more a means of perceiving the expressions of others, especially their faces. However, the act and manner of looking also have meaning as signals, showing for example the amount of interest in another person, and are partly intended as signals. So gaze is both signal and channel, a signal for the recipient, a channel for the gazer.
