ABSTRACT

There is a great deal of variation in NVC between different social situations, as we have seen in other chapters. For example people smile and look more, and stand closer to those they like. However, there are consistent person effects in that if A smiles more than B in one situation he will probably do so in others. Kendon and Cook (1969) studied the gaze behaviour of fifteen subjects, each interacting with between four and eleven others. There was a high degree of consistency for the looking behaviour of individuals, though the identity of the partner also made a difference.
