ABSTRACT
The oldest version of the mythical story has been handed down to us in Ovid's MetarrwrjJ/wses (see translation, Innes, 1955: 83-7). This account exerted a centuries-long influence on subsequent literary versions and philosophic interpretations. We shall therefore discuss it at some length.
