ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of a Jane. As Jane slowly grew in confidence and strength, she began to use her photographs in a more actively experimental way. As Jane determined to face her pain through the pictures, she chose one particularly distressing photograph from her wedding album. The strength that Jane gained through confronting her family in therapy through the medium of their images in the photographs became generalised to the outside world, so that she felt more easily able to manage the relationships in reality. The photograph permitted a talking on two levels: Jane was speaking to the image of her father, and also addressing a part of her self, for they had both shared the same problems. The image represented both a past external reality and an aspect of Jane’s present internal conflict.
