Creating them to order: possible selves
If roles and internal conflicts are important sources of subpersonalities within us, what other sources may there be? One important source is our own ideas about how we wish or want to be.
HEROES AND HEROINES We may identify with a hero or heroine, or with an admired group, and take on their characteristics. For example, in the 1970s I frequently came across hippie and revolutionary subpersonalities in the people I was working with. People identified with these characters, and knew how they dressed, how they behaved and how they talked. Even if they only did it at weekends or on demonstrations, they knew how to be this type of person.
