ABSTRACT

Footwear, or foot coverings, in the crudest sense, have probably existed as long as humans have walked. Naturally, there was no need for shoe sizing systems as long as shoes were made in the fashion. With mass production came the need for a more detailed and broadly used shoe sizing system. Because of the worldwide distribution of footwear by many companies and the need to list sizes for people accustomed to different sizing systems, shoe size labels and shoe boxes often have more than one size printed on them. It is also noted that different shoes of the same shoe size, by virtue of their design, construction, purpose, and different origins, will vary in the physical shape and size of both their inner dimensions and outsole dimensions. Reprinted from Michael Cassidy study is a shoe size calculation chart that gives the measurement of the actual impression made by running shoes and flat-bottomed casual shoes of different sizes.
