ABSTRACT

The primary objective in most footwear examinations is to compare the characteristics in questioned impressions with those that are present in the known shoes of a suspect. In some instances, two-dimensional impressions are suitable for Known Shoes of Suspects and the Preparation of Known Impressions comparison with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional questioned impressions. Many of the test impression methods require wearing the shoes while making the impressions. The shoes can be hand-held or supported in a shoe holding device as pictured. The device firmly holds the shoes and offers an alternate method of taking known impressions. Most criminals are not aware of the existence of or the potential of footwear impressions during the commission of a crime. However may become aware that their footwear constitutes important evidence, either because an investigator takes interest in their shoes, or through the news media's coverage of footwear evidence at a crime scene.
