ABSTRACT

Of course, the guidelines and recommendations discussed above do not absolutely ensure that a material handler will be satisfied with the work load, nor that he or she may not be overexerted or even injured when working. People and conditions differ from each other, from day to day. General guidelines and recommendations have many assumptions, clearly stated or often hidden in fine print. They simplify and normalize, for example, by assuming that only one type of work task is done (such as lifting) or that only one type of strain (such as spinal disc compression) loads the material handler. Furthermore, different experts and authorities (such as researchers, legislators, judges, government or international agencies) in various regions of the earth have differing opinions about what is tolerable or desirable in handling loads. What is acceptable in, say, Europe may not applicable in Asia or North America, for various reasons.
