ABSTRACT

The animal allergens are more widely understood and an evolving issue of concern in the environmental field. This chapter presents information to aid in the search for the more common allergens and expounds on those which may be overlooked in isolated instances. Other than bacterial and mold spores, the most typical allergenic materials found in office buildings are dust mites and cockroach allergens. Cat and dog allergens are more common in homes but may be transferred to office environments. All other allergens previously mentioned are rare occurrences in office/industrial environments or are occupationally related. Commercial laboratories emphasize "the principal consideration in sampling should be the quantity of material captured". For the purpose of extending the reader's knowledge into the realm of understanding human test results and their applicability to a site investigation, the chapter briefs human testing methods along with sample analytical methods.
