ABSTRACT

Sampling may be performed for total volatile organics according to OSHA and National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) procedures, and component identification is accomplished by one of several Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) methods, NIOSH protocols, or special laboratory procedures. The direction in which most environmental professionals embark is to identify as many volatile organics as might be expedient, extend the limits of present technology, and then to target other chemicals anticipated in a given environment. This chapter presents published approaches and some of the more common adaptations of published methodologies. It discusses along with the various nuances to sampling strategies, screening procedures, sampling methodologies, analytical procedures, and interpretation of results. The chapter also discusses sampling methodologies and volatile organic identification. Most sampling methods used for identification may also be used for screening. Thus, samples may be taken simultaneously in situations wherein the requirement for identification is anticipated.
