ABSTRACT

Chlorine is a member of the halogen group. Chlorine with its strong disinfectant power is applied to water to destroy disease producing microorganisms. Chlorine applied to water in its elemental or hypochlorite form initially undergoes hydrolysis to form free available chlorine consisting of the chlorine molecule, hypochlorous acid, and hypochlorite ion. Chlorine is a strong oxidant agent the liberates free iodine from potassium iodide at pH 8 or less. In potable water, the salty taste produced by chloride concentrations is variable and depends on the chemical composition of water. Cyanide refers to all of the cyanide groups in cyanide compounds that can be determined as the cyanide ion. The cyanide ion is a conjugate base of a weak acid, hydrogen cyanide, which is an extremely poisonous gas with an almond odor.
