ABSTRACT

Systems of nature and humanity have no exceptions to the energy laws. They have flows of energy on all their pathways and stored in all the components. The work of nature and of humans is accompanied by the conversion of energy concentrations to a degraded form, but in the process something special is done that is useful to the system. The processes of energy flow generate plant biomass and wildlife biomass. Amounts of energy can be measured by the heat released in a process. There are two units commonly used to measure energy. The calorie is the heat required to raise the temperature of a gram of water one degree on the Celsius scale of temperature. The chapter shows the systems diagram of forest processes in Florida. Fire is a good example of the conversion of energy concentrations into work. The fire generates turbulent eddies in the atmosphere and makes many changes in structure of soils.
