ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with vectors having wide applications. It helps the reader to apply the rules of vector addition and scalar multiplication, obtain the scalar product of two vectors, and obtain the vector product of two vectors. The chapter assists in using triple scalar products and triple vector products, using vector methods to solve simple problems, and differentiating vectors. Two scalar quantities of the same type can be compared by their magnitudes, whereas two vector quantities of the same type cannot be compared adequately in this way. The chapter introduces a binary operation known as the vector product. In general a binary operation takes two vectors and produces from it a third vector. The chapter also looks at a simple practical problem in particle dynamics.
