ABSTRACT

The Fyansford Formation, also known as the Newport Formation, is a Tertiary marine sediment which underlies most of the coastal region around Port Phillip Bay, predominantly to the east, and to a lesser extent to the west of Melbourne's central business district. The soils of the Fyansford/Newport Formation consist predominantly of sandy silts and clays, silty sands and clayey sands. The sand is predominantly fine grained. The relatively small quantity of available data on the Fyansford/Newport Formation indicates that although the deposits appear to be relatively uniform, there is considerable variation from one site to another. The site investigation for the Mordialloc Main Relieving Sewer intercepted the Fyansford/Newport Formation at depths ranging from 10 to 17 metres. The Mentone Intercepting Sewer intersected the Fyansford/Newport Formation over a distance of approximately 2.2 kilometres. Site investigations in Belmont have intercepted the Fyansford/Newport Formation at depths of between 6 and 8 metres.
