ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses microphone types as well as microphone placement and initial EQ settings. When it comes to selecting specific models of microphone for live use there are several things to take into consideration. The choice of microphone affects the final sound and, a guitar sound is much more about art. Bass guitars fitted with standard passive pickups should be mated with a high-impedance DI box. Speaker simulators are a filter circuit designed to replicate the characteristic frequency response. Wind noise can cause real problems when doing outside gigs. The simplest way to locate the frequency range that needs adjustment using a parametric sweep EQ. The exact placement will need to be adjusted to give an even volume across the keyboard. In live sound, instrument tonality is often compromised through close mic placement in the interests of minimizing spill, so degree of corrective EQ is frequently required.
