ABSTRACT

Thirteen years later, on October 1, 1906, a matriculating Edwin Hubble stood shoulder to shoulder with his fellow University of Chicago freshmen in the massive convocation room of Hutchinson Commons, one of four neo-Gothic structures making up the so-called Tower Group. The young men and women with whom Edwin associated tended to be of the upper middle class, possessing the time and resources to devote to frivolity. While Edwin stated that he worked his way through the university by tutoring fellow students and holding down summer jobs, his record of participation in a variety of sports and other extracurricular activities casts doubt on this version of his personal history.” Edwin, who weighed 175 pounds when he enrolled in the university, fought in the amateur heavyweight division, and, by his own account, soon sparked the interest of Chicago promoters, who urged him to turn professional and fight the champion.
