ABSTRACT

I'm delighted and honored to contribute this chapter to the Festschrift volume for Dick Thompson, from both a personnel and a professional perspective. I have known Dick since 1964, during the year before my appointment began in the newly established Department of Psychobiology at the new University of California, Irvine. We met at the annual meeting of the Midwestern APA in Chicago in the Fall of the year. Soon thereafter Jim McGaugh, the founding Chair of the Department, and I began “plotting” to recruit Dick to UCI, successfully as it turned out. Dick joined us in 1967 and remained a close colleague in the Department for many years, interrupted briefly during his sojourn at Harvard University. Of course, we have been good friends to the present.
