ABSTRACT

Analyses of incident and accident reports in the rail industry have shown that the majority of errors that occur relate to people at the front line (63%) rather than to management (30%) or design factors (7%) (RSSB, 2009a). Closer evaluation of incident and accident reports has shown that consistently, NTS such as situational awareness and workload management are key contributors to these events. This is supported by other research across safety-critical industries highlighting how important NTS are to safety (Flin, O’Connor and Crichton, 2008).
